Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Specialised Investment Fund (SIF) in India?
A Specialised Investment Fund (SIF) is a SEBI-regulated investment category introduced in 2024. It allows AMCs to offer long-short strategies to investors with a minimum of ₹10 lakh per AMC per PAN. SIF sits between mutual funds and PMS in terms of ticket size and strategy sophistication.
How is SIF different from a mutual fund?
Unlike regular mutual funds, SIF funds can take unhedged short positions via derivatives up to 25% of net assets. The minimum investment is ₹10 lakh versus ₹500 for mutual funds. SIF offers PMS-style strategy flexibility within a mutual fund regulatory framework — including daily NAV and AMFI reporting.
Are all SIF funds taxed the same way?
No. SIF funds fall into two tax groups. Group A funds (gross equity 65% or more) attract STCG at 20% flat and LTCG at 12.5% after 12 months. Group B funds attract STCG at your income slab rate. Two funds in the same SEBI category can have completely different tax outcomes.
Who should invest in a Specialised Investment Fund?
SIF is designed for investors with ₹10 lakh or more who want more than mutual fund returns with better downside management than pure equity. Doctors, senior professionals, corporates, LLPs, and HNIs replacing FDs are among the primary audiences. The right SIF category depends on your risk profile and investment horizon.
